YouTube’s Comedy Week in May brought together comedic talent and entertainment brands for a week full of YouTube programming, designed to make video viewers more aware of how much comedy content is available to them on the site.

Now, YouTube is trying to corner another active video viewing market: nerds.

Geek Week, running August 4-10 (in direct competition with Discovery’s Shark Week, which seems like a natural dovetail), will take on a similar approach. As evidenced by the massive success of such nerd-branded fare as Comic-Con, blockbuster superhero flicks, Internet sensations like Nerdist and TV shows like “The Big Bang Theory,” nerd culture is alive and well. YouTube is featuring all of its best nerd talent to promote its new and existing content.

Geek Week will highlight more than 100 YouTube channels focused on geek culture. Each day of the week is hosted by a different channel, so Monday will focus more on worldwide geek phenomena like anime or “Doctor Who” hosted by YOMYOMF, while Thursday has programming based on gaming hosted by Machinima and Polaris.

Brief Take: YouTube’s week-long events—whether comedy, geek or other in nature—both serve to promote its niche content, available all the time on demand and on mobile platforms, as well as its larger offerings.
