They say truth is stranger than fiction. As these six 2023 Promax Global Excellence finalists in the category of Documentary Promo demonstrate, it’s definitely as colorful and interesting.

The BBC snags two spots for The Mating Game, which reveals the mating habits of a wide variety of animals with humor, and natural history standby David Attenborough with his Life in Color.

War, an oft-visited topic for documentarians, shows up three times: in National Geographic’s Retrograde, about Afghani soldiers, for Hulu and Disney Plus; SBS Australia’s The Australia War, which is also a dive into history; and Starlight Creative’s very current War in Pictures, which documents the effect photojournalists are having as they capture images from war-torn Ukraine.

Finally, Viasat History’s Stuck in the Suez catalogs what happened in the Suez Canal last March when an enormous shipping vessel got stuck horizontally in the canal, blocking all traffic and causing $60 billion in losses to the global economy. Viasat uses clever visuals to explain the dynamics of the event to viewers.

Check out this year’s Documentary Promo finalists and then join Promax for the 2023 Global Excellence Awards Connection and Celebration event in New York City on December 7.
