VGX, the new incarnation of Spike TV’s Video Game Awards, announced today that this year’s event will include a special one-night only performance of the music from the “Grand Theft Auto V” soundtrack which will be streamed across screens and devices and on VGXLive.com.
And that’s just one of the surprises Viacom unveiled for the newly rebranded event.
“South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone will be on hand to give an exclusive sneak peak of the forthcoming “South Park: The Stick of Truth” game, and the VGX will stream a wave of world premieres during the three-hour event, including “Titanfall,” “Quantum Break,” “Broken Age,” “Dying Light,” Tom Clancy’s The Division,” and “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.”
“For years gamers have been telling us to focus on content over celebrity,” said Casey Patterson, Executive Vice President, Event Production, Talent Development & Studio Relations, Viacom Entertainment Group. “We are stripping away anything that takes time away from world premieres and interviews with the community of game developers that the fans want to hear from. We are also thrilled to be working with Rockstar Games to present the music of Grand Theft Auto V in a performance you won’t see anywhere else.”
VGX got its start as Spike TV’s Video Game Awards but was rebranded for 2013 with a move away from a traditional awards show format. This year’s event will be streamed on the VGX website, as well as across several platforms, screens, and gaming devices, including Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, iOS and Android phones, Yahoo Screen, Hulu, and various Viacom websites. Viacom is touting it as the the most widely-distributed live gaming event ever, with the potential to reach 100 million households.
