It’s tough-going at Turner these days: the broadcaster is starting from scratch its search for a new president at the same time it’s being forced to take a $400 million write-down due to costly programming deals.

Two syndication deals that brought popular CBS dramas The Mentalist and Hawaii 5-0 to TNT are said to be the major cause of the programming costs, Variety reported Monday.

Both shows have underperformed for the cable network, the magazine says. The Mentalist reportedly cost Turner $2.5 million per episode; Hawaii 5-0 went for $2 million an episode.

The big write-down comes just as Turner is having to restart its search for a replacement for departed president Steve Koonin.

Former Fox Entertainment boss Kevin Reilly had been the frontrunner for the gig, but talks between the two sides apparently reached an impasse recently, according to Deadline.

Reilly—along with former Sony Pictures Television’s former programming and production head Zack Van Amburg—had both been extended offers from Turner. Both said no.
