SundanceTV released the official trailer for The Last Panthers, a six-episode limited series based on an infamous gang of real-life Balkan thieves.
The series stars two-time Academy Award nominee Samantha Morton (Minority Report, Sweet and Lowdown), French César Award winner Tahar Rahim (A Prophet), Croatian actor Goran Bogdan (Number 55) and BAFTA and Golden Globe winner and two-time Academy Award nominee John Hurt (The Elephant Man, Midnight Express).
The high-tension drama kicks off with a jewelry store heist in Marseilles, but the tragic death of a little girl during the raid sets a collision course in motion involving a British insurance agent (Morton), a French-Algerian cop (Rahim) and a Serbian diamond thief (Bogdan). The plot follows the players from France to Serbia to the UK, revealing shocking conspiracies and the interplay between jewel traffickers, drugs, criminals and banks.
“The Last Panthers is a complex dive into the labyrinthine underworld of Europe,” said Executive Producer Peter Carlton.
The European series is inspired by the gang of Balkan jewel thieves known as the Pink Panthers, who rose to fame with bold robberies during the day, and are responsible for some of the most challenging thefts in criminal history. Still active today, since 1999 they have been linked to more than 383 incidents in 35 countries, and are known for their movie-style getaways often involving a bicycle, scooter or speedboat.
The series includes opening title music from the late David Bowie’s final album, “Blackstar.” It’s based on the work of French journalist Jérôme Pierrat, who has investigated organized crime in France for years, and co-created and written by the award-winning writer Jack Thorne (The Fades, This Is England).
The Last Panthers aired internationally last November, and will premiere in the U.S. Wednesday, April 13 at 10 p.m.
