Nominations for the 69th Annual Emmy Awards came out on Thursday, July 13, and without HBO’s Game of Thrones in the mix, the best drama race is anyone’s guess. But HBO still managed to prevail with 111 total nominations (revised upward from the 110 the Academy announced Thursday), followed by Netflix with 91, including three shows in the outstanding drama race. NBC, the total for which also was revised up to 64 from 60, scored 22 nods for Saturday Night Live and 11 for This Is Us, the first Big-Four broadcast drama to be nominated since CBS’ The Good Wife in 2011.
Comedy also is ripe for an upset, with Veep‘s leading lady, Julia Louis-Dreyfus going for her sixth consecutive win and Veep itself looking to repeat. And limited series are as competitive as ever, with four Oscar winners competing in the lead actress category.
PromaxBDA Editorial Director Paige Albiniak and Programming Insider Editor in Chief and “Mr. TV” Marc Berman dig into the nominees and make their early picks in this episode of The Daily Brief Podcast. Listen and see if you agree with their choices.
(Editor’s note: MGM, not Lionsgate, produced The Handmaid’s Tale for Hulu.)
