The Conference 2014, June 10-12 in New York, is packed full of thought leaders, panels and keynote addresses that will leave attendees informed and inspired. But there are also plenty of sessions and presentations that highlight the best work done in our industry (and beyond) throughout 2013-2014, including a series of “Brand/Rebrand Highlights,” a morning of title sequences and two of The Conference’s most popular sessions, “State of Design” and “State of Our Art.”
Check out just a few of those places where you can see the best design, rebrand and promo work from the past year:
Two popular perennial sessions at The Conference, “State of Design” and “State of Our Art” will cover the best work in entertainment marketing, advertising, short film, branded content and broadcast design. “State of Design” (Grand Ballroom, 11 a.m. Wednesday) will be presented by Stephen Price, editor of “Stash Magazine,” who will share examples of where design is at now in order to look into the future to see where creative is going next. “State of Our Art” (Grand Ballroom, 4:45 p.m. Thursday) will wrap up The Conference. Hosted by Walter Levitt, CMO of Comedy Central, and Guy Slattery, EVP of marketing at A&E Network, FYI, LMN and Crime & Investigation Network, “State of Our Art” is an example-packed session filled with clips from broadcast promotion to advertising to PSAs, showcasing current trends in the TV industry, how techniques elsewhere can be utilized for TV and how great creative continues to emerge from that one, solid, perfect idea.
To see some of the best creative in recent network rebrands, don’t miss the “Brand/Rebrand Highlights” series at The Conference, which tells the story, beginning to end, of how channels around the world reimagined their on-air looks with the help of agencies big and small. This year’s presenters cover everything from a thoroughly known brand like TV Guide, to the first rebrand in more than 30 years for The Weather Channel, to TV12 Sweden, who made a complete 180-degree turn on its identity.
On Wednesday, three of these rebrands will explain how they were able to transform these brands with TVN Poland, TV12 Sweden and A&E (all three are in Sutton, 2:30 p.m. Wednesday). Luxlotisliner and TVN Poland’s project involved modernizing the TV brand while keeping with its graphic tradition. Black Peacock, Brokendoll and TV12 Sweden faced the reality of completely converting the channel from sports to lifestyle programming. A&E and Troika will explain why the network felt the need to refresh its on-air look to “Be original.”
Later that day, The Weather Channel, Trollbäck+Company and Man Made Music describe their collaboration on the channel’s first refresh in more than 30 years to reflect its new attitude: “It’s amazing out there,” and TV Guide Network walks everyone through how a 61-year-old brand evolved as its audience did (both are in Sutton, 4:15 p.m. Wednesday). Then on Thursday, join Flint Skallen, Stephen Arnold Music and Broadcast Design International as they outline the challenges and triumphs of rebranding China’s CCTV at “A Deep Dive into the Rebranding of CCTV International” (Sutton, 3:45 p.m. Thursday).
Honoring the tradition of high-quality title design, whether it’s within the last century or the last year, two sessions on Thursday morning will first provide some background in title design. Ian Albinson, founder and editor-in-chief of Art of the Title, presents “100 Years of Title Sequence Design,” a detailed look at how themes, design techniques and masters of the craft have shaped the art form since the beginning of film. Then “The Art of Title Design” (both are in Americas Hall I, 10:30 a.m. Thursday), moderated by TWINART’s Ellen and Lynda Kahn, will offer insight into some more recent examples of title sequences making their mark on the TV world: MTV VMAs, “True Detective,” “COSMOS: A Spacetime Odyssey” and “SNL.”
A can’t-miss session each year, “The PromaxBDA Hot Spots Showcase” (Grand Ballroom, 2 p.m. Thursday) is presented by ANATOMY’s Mark Valentine and Science Channel’s Dan Bragg, and will provide a survey of just some of the most buzz-worthy promos meant to leave Conference attendees motivated, inspired and perhaps a bit envious.
