BET is honoring Black Music Month with a documentary called “The Message,” a four-part series about how hip hop culture has evolved over the past 40 years.

The trailer (above) features interviews with Russell Simmons, Ice Cube, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and more, utilizing video footage and news clips from hip hop artists from Grandmaster Flash to Tupac and Nelly.

“Hip hop is a seed planted and nourished amongst the ‘broken glass everywhere’ of mid-70s New York. It has grown to be a worldwide phenomenon and the dominant culture of at least one generation,” said Stephen Hill, president of music programing and specials at BET Networks. “This exciting series examines the origin and the path of the music and message, taking care to objectively analyze its factions and movements.”

“The Message” will kick off this Wednesday, June 4, with its first episode:, “The Birth and Proliferation of Hip Hop.”
