Friday Night Lights’ star Taylor Kitsch morphs into cult leader David Koresh in Paramount Network’s six-part event series, Waco, premiering January 24 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Co-starring are Michael Shannon, John Leguizamo, Andrea Riseborough, Rory Culkin, Melissa Benoist, Paul Sparks, Shea Whigham, Camryn Manheim and Julia Garner.

The scripted series tells the story of the deadly 51-day standoff between Koresh’s religious sect, the Branch Davidians, in Waco, Texas, and the FBI and ATF in 1993. The series is based on two biographies: A Place Called Waco, by Branch Davidian David Thibodeau, one of the sect’s nine survivors; and Stalling for Time: My Life as an FBI Hostage Negotiator, by the FBI’s head of crisis negotiation unit Gary Noesner.

Waco is executive produced by John Erick Dowdle — who wrote episodes one, two and six with his brother, Drew, as well as directed episodes one, two, three and six. Drew Dowdle is also an executive producer along with Salvatore Stabile, who wrote episodes three and five. Kitsch and Shannon also are executive producers.
