Syfy takes viewers on a harrowing virtual reality tour of interstellar space ship, The Nightflyer, in this three-part short. The project is in advance of the series premiere of NightFlyers on Dec. 2.

In the show, based on a story by Game of Thrones’ author George R. R. Martin, a team of scientists in the year 2093 embark on a mission to discover other life forms. Their journey takes them both to the edge of the solar system and to the edge of insanity, as they realize true horror isn’t waiting for them in outer space—it’s already on their ship.

The VR series (episodes 1-3 above and below) introduces the audience to new recruit, Kel, as he has his first experience dealing with one of the ship’s dangerous denizens—beings known as telepaths who can alter reality in terrifying ways.

In episode three, Kel’s harrowing journey through the Nightflyer concludes in a mind-bending showdown with Thale.

The chapters, which were directed and written by Nightflyers’ Executive Producer Jeff Buhler, are a standalone yet complementary experience to the series. The three shorts focus on supplementary stories involving three characters from the on-air series (Murphy, Thale, Lommie) as well as three new characters specific to the VR series.

The supplementary series, which can be watched with or without VR goggles, was produced in collaboration with Los Angeles-based companies Here Be Dragons (production) and Warm + Fuzzy (picture and VFX), and New York City-based Q Department (sound FX). It was shot on location in Limerick, Ireland, during series production. Both Nightflyers and the VR experience are produced by Universal Cable Productions. NBC Digital Enterprises and Google provided the funding.
