Starz unveiled a first look and premiere date for its third Philippa Gregory novel adaptation, marking the continuation of its historic storytelling in the Tudor era.

The Spanish Princess, based on Gregory’s The Constant Princess and The King’s Curse, follows a young Catherine of Aragon on her quest to become Queen of England. After losing her husband Prince Arthur (Angus Irmie), Catherine initiates a plan to wed the throne’s new heir, forge an alliance with England, and claim the crown she was promised.

The nearly two-minute trailer shows Catherine’s determination and sacrifices as she protects her country, claiming “destiny is for the bold.” It also previews Spain and England’s predicament as they must find a way to unite against their enemies.

The story is told from the point of view of the women involved, shedding light on the untold corner of history: the lives of people of color and living and working in 16th century London, according to the network. It also potrays Catherine from a new angle, one very different from her historic reputation.

“Catherine of Aragon has generally been depicted negatively, as an unwanted and burdensome wife, so this story of her early years as a strong, driven young woman and shrewd political player is a fresh, untold tale,” said showrunners Emma Frost and Matthew Graham.

The limited series is the third drawn from Gregory’s novels, following the award-nominated The White Queen and The White Princess. It is produced by Playground and All3 Media’s New Pictures.

The royal drama unfolds May 5 on Starz.
