Shudder is debuting a new original series The Core, that goes behind the scenes of filmmaking and explores the secrets of horror movies.
Hosted by director Mickey Keating (Psychopaths, Carnage Park) the 10-episode talk show dissects genre films through the lens of elements such as camera tricks and special effects techniques. Whether it’s a demo of head explosions or a primer on avoiding predictable jump scares, The Core dives into the on screen elements that leave viewers shaking to … their very cores.
Each week, Keting is joined by a special guest from the genre community, including DJ and music producer Flying Lotus (also known as Steven Ellison), actor and genre fan Elijah Wood, Canadian cult favorites The Soska Sister and filmmaker Rodney Ascher (Primal Screen, Room 237.)
The series breaks down the walls of a formal interview by allowing the guests to fully illustrate his or her points, occasionally in graphic detail.
“The Core is a twisted celebration of the magic of genre filmmaking, and I can honestly say there has never been anything like it,” Kating said a statement.
Audiences will hear from experts such as criminologists, freak show buskers and special effects makeup artists.
“Our members not only love to watch horror films and series, they want to know everything they can about the process of making the stuff they love,” Shudder Vice President of Development Owen Shiflett said in a statement.
“In a genre defined by shock and awe, The Core manages to push the boundaries even further, with an irreverent take on the standard talk show,” added Series Creator and Executive Producer Benjamin Blank of Uproxx, producers of The Core. “This is a show for horror fans created by horror fans.”
The Core premieres November 16.
