Showtime revealed a promo for The Putin Interviews, featuring interviews between political filmmaker Oliver Stone and Russian President Vladimir Putin, as the two discuss Russia’s meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

The four-hour docuseries will air over four consecutive nights starting Monday, June 12 at 9 p.m.

“If Vladimir Putin is indeed the great enemy of the United States, then at least we should try to understand him,” Stone said in a statement.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker has met with Putin more than a dozen times over the past two years, including four times this year, most recently in February following the U.S. presidential election and Donald Trump’s inauguration.

“Why did Russia hack the election,” Stone asks in the promo, as Putin smirks at the question.

Since becoming the Russian president in 2000, Putin has not spoken at such length to any Western interviewer. Showtime compared the series to The Nixon Interviews that featured conversations between David Frost and former President Richard Nixon that aired in 1977.

“It’s not a documentary as much as a question and answer session,” Stone has said about the series, according to CNN.

The Putin Interviews will showcase a series of conversations about topics such as

relations between the U.S. and Russia; allegations of Russia meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections; NATO; and “fostering turmoil in Syria, Ukraine and elsewhere,” according to Showtime.

He also discusses his tenure as president, personal relationships with past presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama as well as Donald Trump; Edward Snowden’s flight to asylum in Moscow; and the resignation of U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

One of the more surreal exchanges occurs when Stone introduced Putin to Stanley Kubrick’s Cold War satire Dr. Strangelove, which they watch together.

Stone is known for his personal interviews with controversial world figures including Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez and Benjamin Netanyahu. His most recent release, Snowden, was a dramatic account of Edward Snowden’s decision to leak information about NSA surveillance programs.

His last Showtime documentary, The Untold History of the United States, aired in 2012 and explored factors behind the Cold War, like the United State’s decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. It remains one of the network’s top-ranking docuseries.

The Putin Interviews is produced y Fernando Sulichin, New Element Media and Rob Wilson.
