In advance of the WNBA’s All-Star Weekend, ESPN’s multiplatform initiative The Undefeated on Friday released an anthem, “Undefeated,” by R&B artist Rayana Jay that celebrates black female athletes. Portions of the song and music video will air on ABC during the live broadcast of the 2018 WNBA All-Star Game on Saturday, July 28 at 3:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. PT.

The song — which showcases such superstars as Serena Williams, Laila Ali, Florence Griffith Joyner, Simone Manuel and Candice Parker — “celebrates the resilience of black female athletes who face opponents on the courts, playing fields and track while simultaneously defying stereotypes, championing for change and redefining history,” according to ESPN.

“Undefeated” is published and licensed by Hollywood Records, and besides Jay, features songwriter Blush and producer Trak Girl. It was produced in collaboration with Disney Music Group. The single, which is available for download on Apple Music, Spotify and Widestream, was recorded at San Francisco’s Women’s Audio Mission, the world’s only professional recording studio built and run entirely by women.

The music video was shot in Brooklyn, N.Y, and directed by ESPN Films’ Marquis Daisy. It features Jay accompanied by the Lady Eagles of Paul Robeson Campus High School in Brooklyn.

The single Undefeated is an extension of a joint project between The Undefeated and Morgan State University’s School of Global Journalism and Communication. Commissioned by The Undefeated, Morgan State produced an academic study entitled “Beating Opponents, Battling Belittlement: How African-American Female Athletes Use Community to Navigate Negative Images” that examined the historical portrayal and imagery of black female athletes across sports from 1900 to present.
