Tension between the CIA and a newly-elected president come to boil in the gripping trailer for the sixth season of Showtime’s Homeland.

The promo, in a striking display of the show’s tendency toward verisimilitude, has Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) at odds with the new president-elect (Elizabeth Marvel), which is pretty similar to reality, except the fictional president-elect just so happens to be a woman.

The trailer also gives a closer look at the core of the season, as young Muslims launch a website expressing their views on the way Muslims are treated and perceived in a supposedly “free” and religiously “open minded” United States.

Plus, in a shocking moment from the trailer, Quinn (Rupert Friend), a man who appears to be brain-damaged, utters his first words.

The new season is being filmed in New York City, and will pick up a matter of months after the season-five climax, comprising the days between the election and the new president’s inauguration.

The series stars Claire Danes. Guest stars include Hill Harper, Robert Knepper, Patrick Sabongui and Dominic Fumusa.

Homeland returns Jan. 15 on Showtime.
