Netflix’s Bridgerton – with its young and gorgeous cast, steamy storylines and sumptuous costumes and sets – was a smash hit in the pandemic’s dark days of mid-2020, making stars of Rege-Jean Page as the dashing Duke of Hastings and Phoebe Dynevor as his lady love and eventual wife. Season one also featured a character that captured people’s attention: Queen Charlotte, played by Golda Rosheuvel in a regal, often officious manner.

Netflix capitalizes on that fan interest with prequel Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which reveals how a young Charlotte (India Amarteifio) came to be in her position and what her true relationship is with the little-seen and seemingly ailing king. The limited series features several characters from Bridgerton’s main cast, including Dowager Viscountess Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell), mother of the brood featured in the main series, and the influential Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh), who was an early friend of the queen. It also includes new characters played by familiar actors, such as the dowager queen, played by Michelle Fairley (Game of Thrones).

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story premieres Thursday, May 4 on Netflix.
