With 210 designated media markets in the U.S., a large part of the television marketing work in America is being done outside of the major entertainment centers in New York and Los Angeles.

To better serve local station professionals, PromaxBDA is taking its expertise on the road in a series of new day-long events dubbed “The Essentials.”

The one-day seminars offer sessions on the latest tactics, strategies, and creative solutions for the challenges facing their stations and markets. One track serves students who might be interested in entering the fields of marketing, promotion and design, while another track serves local professionals.

“The great news about PromaxBDA is that over the last few years the relationship between PromaxBDA and local broadcast TV stations has grown dramatically,” said Bill Butler, VP, programming and promotion, Sinclair Broadcast Group. “PromaxBDA is a terrific resource for promotion people.”

The first edition of The Essentials is slated for October 10 on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing—about two hours’ drive from eight different local markets, including Detroit, Toledo, Fort Wayne, South Bend/Elkhart, Windsor, Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo/Battle Creek, and Flint/Saginaw/Bay City.

Sessions are designed to train local station professionals to become better promoters of their stations and programming, as well as become stronger leaders and managers.

And the day will wrap with a showcase of “Best of the Best” spots highlighting the year’s best work from around the country.

The association recently introduced a local station membership package that allows individual stations to offer up to five staff members access to PromaxBDA’s member benefits.

“We have listened to what stations have been telling us,” said Lucy Denny-Gardner, PromaxBDA’s director of local market development and Station Summit producer.

After the East Lansing event, the next Essentials seminar is slated for October 21 in Atlanta, just a short drive from stations in Birmingham, Chattanooga, Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville/Anderson, Augusta/Aiken, Macon, and Columbus.

PromaxBDA is also offering a series of Digital Master Classes throughout the fall that offer half-hour, live-streaming sessions aimed at fine-tuning everyday skills. The Digital Master Classes are also available on-demand at www.promaxbda.org following the live-streams.

“The PromaxBDA local Station Summit in June has been a wonderful venue for all of us to get together. Now with this new local membership effort, PromaxBDA is making professional development seminars, digital master classes, and video on demand available to watch from wherever we are in the country,” Butler said. “Whereas a lot of national promotion people live and work in NYC, LA and DC, local broadcast TV people live all over the country, so PromaxBDA’s effort to make all of this information centrally accessible is terrific.”
