‘Tis the season to engage with television on the second screen. This Christmas, as the snow falls gently outside, gather ‘round the digital fire, power up your device of choice, and tune in with the following new apps or app updates from some of your favorite media companies.

Watch truTV
Updating its rather cumbersomely titled previous app, truTV 2 GO, truTV presents a newly named app with a fresh interface. Subscribers can stream a live simulcast of truTV’s East Coast and West Coast feeds on a dynamic video player within Watch truTV. In addition to live streaming and on-demand content, the app’s player offers a Social Playback function with curated social media feeds synched up with replays of select series. Watch truTV is available for free for both iOS and Android devices.

AMC Yeah!
AMC has been putting out such great television for so long, it’s easy to forget it mostly airs films. AMC Yeah!, brings the network’s movie streaming service to the iPad, replete with interactive features paired with full-length feature films. Find Wes Craven interviews packaged with “Nightmare on Elm Street,” Kevin Smith’s hilarious rants alongside “Clerks,” and plenty more diversions for film buffs. At $5 for a 48-hour rental, AMC Yeah!’s flicks aren’t exactly cheap, but with all the bonus content, the bang-for-buck factor is high.

TWC TV for Kindle
Amazon helped you shop this holiday season, and now it can help you watch television as well, as Time Warner Cable’s TV app comes to Kindle Fire HD and HDX. TWC subscribers can enjoy up to 300 channels of live TV available in-home, plus up to 10 live channels accessible away from home (including BBC America, Cooking Channel, DIY Network and Food Network). But the best part is, now it’s easier than ever to read the book and watch the film or TV adaptation.

A&E + Lifetime = Xbox 360
A+E Networks’ apps have had great success for the company, with more than eight million downloads across various platforms to date. Last week, that digital reach extended a little further, with apps for A&E and Lifetime popping up on Microsoft’s Xbox 360. Subscribers to Xbox Life Gold may now watch episodes, movies and exclusive clips of Lifetime and A&E programming, including full seasons of some series. And it’s all navigable voice- and gesture-navigable via Kinect.

SpongeBob Moves In – Holiday Version
For the kids this Christmas – or perhaps for the kid in YOU – Nickelodeon presents a holiday update to its popular SpongeBob Moves In app. In this game available in The App Store, players customize their own underwater city with characters, buildings and accessories, aiming all the while to fulfill citizens’ wishes and pump up the town’s happiness meter. Naturally, the spreading of holiday cheer meshes perfectly with this premise, and Nick has stocked its Christmas upgrade with festive new characters, buildings, decorations and even hidden recipes offering delicious treats which SpongeBob must prepare for the local elves to prevent a mysterious villain from turning everyone into a bunch of jerks.
