Netflix unleashed a surprise first trailer for Brit Marling’s upcoming original series The OA this week, and the eight-part project explores some heavy philosophical concepts.

The series follows the tale of a blind girl (played by Marling) who went missing as a child and returns seven years later with the added bonus of her vision having returned. In the promo for the show there is dark orchestral music playing throughout the clip with images set to dark tones and muted colors, all coming together to give off a dramatic, melancholic aura.

The OA is directed by Marling’s frequent collaborator, director Zal Batmanglij and was co-produced by Netflix and Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment, as well as Marling, Batmanglij, and True Detective producer Anonymous Content.

The series’ cast includes Emory Cohen, Scott Wilson, Phyllis Smith, Jason Isaacs, Alice Krige, Patrick Gibson, Brendan Meyer, Ian Alexander, and Brandon Perea.

The first season of The OA will premiere in full, Friday, Dec. 16 on Netflix.
