Lisa Borders is doubling down on efforts to reach gender parity across all industries.

Betti Wiggins is changing the way American children eat at school.

Nafessa Williams is breaking barriers as TV’s first black lesbian superhero.

These are three of the 10 women featured on NBC series She Thrives: Black Women Making History Today, a month-long special airing on NBCBLK, the African-American news vertical of NBCNews.com.

Launching in conjunction with February as Black History Month, it recognizes the accomplishments, power and prowess of black women from a variety of generations, occupations and regions who are shaping their communities and, in their own way, altering life for everyone in 21st century America.

Those highlighted align with NBCBLK’s mission to elevate America’s conversation about black identity, social issues and culture, and their portraits, created by illustrator Adriana Bellet, are featured on the website.

“The women profiled in our She Thrives series exemplify the mission of Black History Month in a real and tangible way,” Yvette Miley, senior vice president, NBC News and MSNBC, said in a statement. “Each individual takes inspiration both from the past and from their contemporaries as they make their own mark on the world. We’re committed to using our platforms to share the stories of such accomplished women.”
