Here’s a truth we think you can handle: NBC plans to air a live performance of A Few Good Men in early 2017 that will be produced by Aaron Sorkin, writer of the original Broadway play.

Set in 1986 in Washington and the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, A Few Good Men centers on a military lawyer, Lt. Daniel Kaffee, who is asked to defend three Marines on trial for murder.

The play was Sorkin’s professional debut in 1989, which three years later he adopted for the Oscar-nominated film starring Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson.

NBC’s production will be based on the stage version. Sorkin will write the script and executive produce alongside Craig Zadan and Neil Meron — the pair behind NBC’s previous live musicals: The Sound of Music, Peter Pan Live! and The Wiz Live!, as well as Hairspray slated for the end of 2016.

“I’ve been incredibly impressed watching NBC resurrect live musical theater for television and I’m eager to team up with Craig and Neil to help bring live drama back as well,” Sorkin said.

NBC chairman Robert Greenblatt said he’s thrilled to have Sorkin on board.

“Aaron is one of the most acclaimed theater, television, and film authors of our time, and I am pleased that the live event business that we pioneered with musicals is now expanding into other genres and attracting artists of his caliber,” Greenblatt said in a statement.

Sorkin produced the TV series The West Wing, which ran from 1999-2006, Sports Night, and The Newsroom. His film work includes The Social Network and Steve Jobs.

He is currently preparing for a directorial debut on Molly’s Game, which he also wrote, based on Molly Bloom’s memoir about how she built one of the most exclusive, high-stakes underground poker games in the world.

A Few Good Men will be produced by Universal Television in association with Sony Pictures Television and Warner Bros. Television. Casting and a premiere date have yet to be announced.
