The upcoming sixth season of CMT’s Nashville will be its last, the network said Friday.

“We’re announcing today that Nashville will return for its 6th and final season on January 4, 2018,” said Kevin Beggs, chairman of the Lionsgate Television Group, which produces the series, in a statement. “After more than 120 episodes of unforgettable television, we believe that creatively it is time for the series to come to its triumphant close at the end of the upcoming season.”

The final season will air in two eight-episode parts, with the final eight episodes airing in summer 2018.

Nashville started its run on ABC in 2012, with Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere headlining the cast, and aired there for four seasons. After ABC cancelled it, Lionsgate and ABC Studios shopped it, with Viacom-owned CMT picking it up. The country-music-themed drama seemed to be a perfect fit for the network. At that time, Hulu also acquired first-run streaming rights, which it will maintain through the final season.

Early in season five, Britton — who was the heart of the series as country superstar Rayna James — departed, with her character dying tragically.

With Nashville ending, CMT will officially be out of the scripted series business, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Parent company Viacom is refocusing on Paramount Network, which is being rebranded from Spike, as well as MTV, Comedy Central, BET, Nickelodeon and Nick Jr.

“All of us on Nashville are so incredibly grateful to the show’s fans, who convinced CMT to give us a chance to keep telling the story of these remarkable characters,” said executive producer Marshall Herskovitz, also in a statement. “And we want to return the favor with a final season that celebrates all the joys and passions, twists and turns—and amazing music!—that made Nashville such an exciting journey for the last six years.”

Herskovitz executive produces with his creative partner Ed Zwick, with whom he created Thirtysomething. Steve Buchanan and Callie Khouri, who created the series, also executive produce.

Nashville stars Hayden Panettiere as Juliette Barnes, Clare Bowen as Scarlett O’Connor, Chris Carmack as Will Lexington, Charles Esten as Deacon Claybourne, Kaitlin Doubleday as Jessie Caine, Jonathan Jackson as Avery Barkley, Sam Palladio as Gunnar Scott, Maisy Stella as Daphne Conrad and Lennon Stella as Maddie Conrad. In addition, Season 6 features Rhiannon Giddens as Hallie Jordan and Cameron Scoggins as Zach Welles in recurring roles.
