“Behind closed doors we’re all ruled by the same desires. And those desires can be raw and dark and deeply shameful.”

That establishes the premise for Netflix’s psychological thriller Gypsy, starring Naomi Watts as Jean Holloway, a therapist in the midst of an identity crisis who begins to develop intimate and illicit relationships with the people in her patients’ lives.

“I’ve been thinking about TV for a little bit but I couldn’t imagine not getting bored,” Watts says in Netflix’s featurette for the show. “And Jean—slash Diane—definitely is not someone that is going to be boring.

Watts delves into her character’s split personality, and her relationship with Sidney Pierce (Sophie Cookson), the girlfriend of one of her patients.

“Naomi Watts brings everything to this,” Cookson says.

Billy Crudup plays Michael Holloway, Jean’s husband and “love of her life.”

“When you’re working with someone so good, you want to try and be as good,” Crudup says of Naomi.

Gypsy premiered June 30 on Netflix.
