MTV commissioned Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas to take on a tough subject for its “Look Different” campaign.
What subject? What it’s like to be white in America.
“If you say the wrong thing, then suddenly you are a racist,” says one of the film’s white subjects.
It’s an interesting turning of the tables at a time when subjects such as gay marriage, the right to be publicly transgender and racism are constantly popping up in the public conversation. While all of those tricky topics are in the zeitgeist, MTV is asking the so-called majority to look itself in the mirror.
“How might your life be different if you weren’t white?” Vargas asks young people. A lot of them squirm in their seat when asked to answer and some get downright angry.
That doesn’t deter Vargas though: “Hey, this is great. Let’s get all uncomfortable together.”
MTV’s White People premieres July 22 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
