Every year, the U.K. anticipates the flood of heart-warming Christmas adverts and none more so than those from retailer John Lewis.

This year, Moz the Monster and an adorable little boy named Joe are the stars of the show, in this spot that traces the trajectory of their all-too-short-lived friendship.

Michel Gondry directs, and the score is provided by the British band Elbow, who covers The Beatles’ “Golden Slumber,” reports Adweek.

John Lewis also is taking the concept into the world, with a Moz-themed Christmas window at its Oxford Street flagship, and a Facebook feature that allows users to “Mozify” themselves with their phone cameras. Ten John Lewis stores will offer customers “Monster Maker” stations whey they can take selfies with Moz.

An audio version of the story, read by actress Sally Phillips, is available for download on johnlewis.com. Finally, customers can buy Moz-themed toys and mugs with a portion of those sales receipts going to UK-based children’s charity Barnardo’s.
