Season three of HBO’s My Brilliant Friend, based on the best-selling novels by Elena Ferrante, picks up the story of two young women – childhood friends Lila and Elena – as they grow up and make their way in the world.
Lila (Gaia Gerace) married very young and had a child. Unhappy, she leaves her husband and the safety of his position and instead finds work in a factory to support herself and her son. By contrast, Elena, also known as Lenù, has left Naples and gone off and earned her college degree. Now a successful novelist, she’s living in an affluent and high-brow society that Lila can only imagine.
Even though their lives are now so different, the two women remained tied to each other.
My Brilliant Friend is produced by The Apartment and Wildside, both Fremantle companies, along with FremantleMedia Italia and Fandango Production, in collaboration with Rai Fiction and HBO Entertainment. The story and screenplays are by Ferrante, Francesco Piccolo, Laura Paolucci and Saverio Costanzo.
Season three of My Brilliant Friend will debut Feb. 28 on HBO and HBO Max and on Feb. 6 on Italy’s Rai 1.
