CBS on Wednesday announced the biggest Survivor thus far in the show’s 39 seasons: 20 of the game’s most legendary players are returning to outwit, outlast and outplay each other for a grand prize of $2 million in season 40, Winners at War.
“To celebrate and honor this momentous 20-year milestone, we created the biggest battle in Survivor history!” said executive producer and host Jeff Probst in a statement. “For the first time ever, 20 winners, who have masterfully proven they can outwit, outplay and outlast in this game, will face off to determine who is the greatest player of all time!”
This year, the show is shot in the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji but when the show debuted on May 31, 2000, the cast was marooned on the beaches of Borneo. Since then, nearly 600 castaways have played the game, with only 38 taking the title of Sole Survivor. Of those, only Sandra Diaz-Twine has won the title twice.
Early-season winners will face new elements, such as immunity idols and rewards like fire tokens, that didn’t exist when they first played, providing a whole new challenge.
The 40th season is taking place in Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands.
