Joker made its mark Monday morning as the first comic-inspired movie to get real recognition from the Motion Picture Academy with 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture, best director for Todd Phillips and best actor for Joaquin Phoenix.

Joker was the most-nominated movie, followed by Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, Sam Mendes’ 1917 and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman with 10 each. And tying for six each were Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit and Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite.

With The Irishman and Marriage Story receiving 16 nominations between them, Netflix was the studio with the most total nominations with a total of 24. Other Netflix movies to receive nominations were The Two Popes, which was nominated best original screenplay as well as best actor for Jonathan Pryce and best supporting actor for Anthony Hopkins; as well as animated features Klaus and I Lost My Body.

Disney and Sony were right behind Netflix with 23 and 20 nominations, respectively. Sony is the distributor of such films as Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, Little Women and Pedro Almodovar’s Pain and Glory.

Nine films were nominated for best picture, including 1917, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Joker, Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood and Parasite. Five directors of those movies were nominated best director: Sam Mendes for 1917, Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, Todd Phillips for Joker, Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon A Time ... in Hollywood and Bong Joon Ho for Parasite.

Bong is the only director of color to be nominated, and no female directors were nominated, even though Greta Gerwig’s Little Women tied for third-most total nominations with its six.

Nominees for best actor are Antonio Banderas for Pain and Glory, Leonardo DiCaprio for Once Upon A Time … in Hollywood, Adam Driver for Marriage Story, Joaquin Phoenix for Joker and Jonathan Pryce for The Two Popes.

Best supporting actor mentions go to Tom Hanks for It’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Anthony Hopkins for The Two Popes, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci for The Irishman and Brad Pitt for Once Upon A Time … in Hollywood.

Among lead actresses, nods went to Cynthia Erivo for Harriet, Scarlett Johansson for Marriage Story, Charlize Theron for Bombshell, Saoirse Ronan for Little Women and Renee Zellweger for Judy.

And supporting actress nominations went to Kathy Bates for Richard Jewell; Laura Dern for Marriage Story; Johansson for Jojo Rabbit, scoring the rare two-nomination Oscars; Florence Pugh for Little Women; and Margot Robbie for Bombshell.
