Fires might be flaring up in Apple TV Plus’ new thriller, City on Fire, but more likely that’s meant to be a distraction from what’s really going on. Somehow the story will thread together fire, the underground music scene with a wealthy upstate family to unravel a murder.
To set the tone of the series, based on the novel of the same title by Garth Risk Hallberg, Los Angeles-based design studio Imaginary Forces created a multimedia main title, inspired by subway graffiti, punk rock zine culture and street flyers of the gritty Lower East Side music scene.
Imaginary Forces, under the supervision of creative directors Karin Fong and Rob Slychuk, stuffed the opening sequence full of Easter eggs while also intending to spark a conversation around post-9/11 unrest and gentrification.
City on Fire was created by Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz (The OC, Gossip Girl) and stars Chase Sui Wonders, Jemima Kirk, Wyatt Oleff and Nico Tortorella.
The eight-episode limited series debuted Friday, May 12 on Apple TV Plus with new episodes dropping each week.
