On April 26, 1986, an experiment at the Chernobyl nuclear reactor in Ukraine quickly turned into a disaster. Hundreds of thousands of people within a 30 km radius of the power plant were evacuated from their homes, never to return.
To remember this solemn occasion, TV Channel Ukraine created a unique embroidered canvas to depict the tragedy in a native Ukrainian way – with black and red cross-stiching.
“Ukrainian embroidery is not merely decorative, but also a very mystical and sacral thing. We have a lot of symbols in our culture; they are the part of our nation’s code. But 30 years ago, another symbol was added to Ukrainians’ lives: Radiation,” wrote the channel’s PR specialist, Diana Kolesnykova.
“The message is simple: we have to live with it, we need to remember, we should be thankful to those who sacrificed their lives to stop this disaster back in 1986, and we must do everything to not repeat it again.”
