Helen Mirren stars as the 18th-century Russian monarch Catherine the Great in HBO’s new miniseries, premiering this fall.
The four-part drama follows the titular character toward the end of reign—an integral time of her rule that “helped shape the future of Russian politics,” HBO says. It’ll also focus on her romantic relationship with military leader Grigory Potemkin (Jason Clarke).
The series’ trailer features Mirren as the tumultuous monarch who holds “absolute power” in her hand amid scandal, politics and immense conflict.
Catherine the Great also stars Georgina Beedle, Thomas Doherty, Andrew Rothney, Antonia Clarke, and Phil Dunster. It’s written by Nigel Williams and directed by Philip Martin, whose credits include The Crown. Mirren serves as executive producer alongside David M. Thompson of Origin Pictures and Charlie Pattinson of New Pictures.
