Let the games begin.
HBO released the official teaser trailer for its hotly anticipated Game of Thrones’ prequel, House of the Dragon, kicking off hours of fan-generated content as they parse every second of the footage.
House of the Dragon is based on Game of Thrones’ author George R. R. Martin’s encyclopedic look at House Targaryen, Fire & Blood, and is set 200 years before the events of the main series.
At that time, Westeros was ruled by King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine, The Outsider), the fifth Targaryen to do so and grandson to “the Old King” Jaehaerys Targaryen, who himself was grandson to Westeros’ original conqueror, Aegon I.
But it wouldn’t be Westeros if someone wasn’t always jockeying for the throne. Viserys’ younger brother, the hot-headed Daemon (Matt Smith, The Crown) has a claim of his own, as does Viserys’ only daughter, Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), although the Targaryen line of power hasn’t included women up to this point.
Besides Considine, Smith and D’Arcy, House of the Dragon also stars Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys “The Sea Snake” Velaryon, Eve Best as his wife, Rhaenys Targaryen, who was passed over for the throne when the Lords of Westeros selected Viserys to succeed his grandfather. Fabien Frankel is Ser Criston Cole, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard; Sonoya Mizuno (Devs) is Mysaria, Daemon’s lover and advisor; Rhys Ifans is Otto Hightower, Hand of the King, and Olivia Cooke (Slow Horses) is his daughter, Alicent.
HBO also released several character posters along with the teaser trailer:

House of the Dragon is co-created by Martin, who also executive produces, and Ryan Condal, who also serves as co-showrunner with Miguel Sapochnik as well as executive producer and writer. Sapochnik, who directed several key episodes of Game of Thrones, also directs. Sara Hess executive produces and writes. Joceyln Diaz, Vince Geradis and Ron Schmidt also executive produce. Directors are Clare Kilner, Geeta V. Patel and Greg Yaitanes, who also co-executive produces.
House of the Dragon premieres Sunday, August 21 on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
