Musical prodigy Grace VanderWaal returns to Disney Plus as Stargirl Caraway in Hollywood Stargirl, a sequel to the service’s 2020 original film, Stargirl.

In the movie, Stargirl and her mom, Ana (Judy Greer), leave Mica, Arizona to relocate to Los Angeles where Ana has gotten a job as a costume designer for a movie. Stargirl quickly makes new friends, including brothers and aspiring filmmakers Evan (Elijah Richardson) and Terrell (Tyrell Jackson Williams). She also befriends her neighbor, Mr. Mitchell (Judd Hirsch) and runs into one of her musical idols, Roxanne Martel (Uma Thurman).

“All I wanted was to dream crazy things and find people who were crazy enough to dream them with me,” Stargirl says in the trailer.

VanderWaal, who won NBC’s America’s Got Talent in September 2016 when she was just 12, performs her own original song, “Figure It Out,” that she wrote for the film. Like Stargirl, VanderWaal often performs with a ukulele.

Julia Hart returns to direct. Hart and Jordan Horowitz wrote the original script, based on the original character from Jerry Spinelli’s best-selling book Stargirl. Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Lee Stollman and Horowitz produce, with Kristin Hahn, Nathan Kelly and Jerry Spinelli executive producing.

The movie begins streaming on Disney Plus on June 3.
