The tapes were only the beginning when Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why returns.

Season two follows up on loose ends from season one, where high school student Hannah (Katherine Langford) left behind 13 cassette tapes detailing how other students mistreated her and drove her to commit suicide.

Now, Polaroids are surfacing, and Clay (Dylan Minnette) receives one with the words “Hannah wasn’t the only one” scrawled on the back.

“I thought this whole thing be over,” he says in the trial. “But it’s not.”

As Liberty High prepares to go on trial, the photos lead him and his classmates to uncover a sickening secret, and a conspiracy to cover it up.

“It’s going to keep happening,” Zach (Ross Butler) says in the spots. “It doesn’t stop.”

Season two will answer some of the big questions left hanging in the balance at the end of season one, including:

  • How will Jessica heal in the aftermath of her assault?
  • Will Bryce be brought to justice?
  • How will Clay move on from the devastating loss of Hannah?
  • What happened to Alex?
  • What choices will Tyler make in the face of his social isolation

The controversial series tackles issues such as suicide and abuse, and for season two Netflix added additional resources to support viewers, such as a video discussion series where cast members out of character address various topics depicted on the show.

The website 13ReasonsWhy.Info includes information and resources for spotting signs of depression, understanding consent, the many different forms of bullying and more.

“From the beginning we believed this series had the potential to be a powerful agent for change, and we saw a global conversation emerge with the launch of Season 1,” says Netflix.

The series is written, created and produced by Brian Yorkey, with executive producers Selena Gomez, Mandy Teefey, Kristel Laiblin, Anonymous Content Steve Golin and Joy Gorman.

13 Reasons Why premieres May 18 on Netflix.
