Google has found a way to create a series of set-top boxes around the house with its new affordable Chromecast.

The new device, priced at $35, resembles a small flash drive and plugs directly into an HDTV in order to stream video content from YouTube, Google Play, Chrome or Netflix. According to Google, the option for streaming Pandora is coming soon as well.

It works with both Android and iOS smartphones, tablets or computers, using technology similar to the Roku Streaming Stick or Apple’s AirPlay.

The system works without a remote, as the Chromecast option will appear on the device once plugged in and only requires clicking “Cast.” Chromecast is available now through Google Play and will also be sold through Best Buy stores.

Brief Take: With the popularity of set-top boxes and more and more TV consumers opting into streaming services instead of cable subscriptions, Google’s Chromecast solution is a smart and affordable one. And Google is able to ease into the set-top box market by connecting devices to its own browser, Chrome, but also giving consumers access to other popular streaming services.
