Joining fellow media giants Apple, Intel and Sony, Google is making moves to launch an online version of pay television. It marks the second time in two years that Google has gone down this path.
Insiders report that Google has been approaching media companies about licensing content for an Internet TV service that would stream traditional programming, delivering cable TV-style channel packages over broadband connections. The insiders also reported that Google has gone so far as to provide a demo of the new streaming product to potential content providers.
Brief Take: Should Google figure out a way into the emerging SVOD business – alongside more established players such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon – TV studios are the immediate winners. More competition for programs means sky-rocketing prices.
