Erich Maria Remarque’s classic novel All’s Quiet on the Western Front is now a theatrical film that’s coming to Netflix.

The film tells the story of Paul (Felix Kammerer), a young German soldier who’s been deployed to the Western Front during World War 1. At first, Paul and his comrades-in-arms are excited by the prospect of war and expect to march triumphantly into Paris and claim it for the Fatherland. Their excitement quickly turns to fear and desperation as reality sets in.

“There is a feeling that will be with us for our whole life: the feeling of the legacy of two wars,” said director, producer and writer Edward Berger, who is German. “Our view of war is dominated by sorrow and shame, by devastation and guilt. Nothing positive remains, not the tiniest spark of heroism. I found making our history, our background and our attitude to war the driving force behind a film a great challenge. And I thought that this very specific German perspective may well be of interest to people in other countries too. Especially at the moment.”

The movie also stars Albrecht Schuch, Aaron Hilmer, Moritz Klaus, Edin Hasanovic, Adrian Grünewald, Thibault De Montalembert, Devid Striesow and Daniel Brühl (Rush, Captain America: Civil War). Edward Berger directed, wrote the script – along with Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell, and also produced – along with producers Malte Grunert and Daniel Dreifuss.

The original film premiered in Germany on September 29 and in select theaters in the U.S. on October 7. It starts streaming on Netflix on October 28.
