FX has dropped surreal, trippy teasers highlighting the season two return of Atlanta, created, written by and starring Donald Glover.
“Spotlight” (above) showcases different moments from the season with a cinematic touch, while “Heavy Rotation” (below) flips through different backgrounds of the life of Glover’s character Earnest “Earn” Marks as he topples from one scene to the next.
Glover stars as a Princeton dropout working his way through the Atlanta music scene with his cousin and aspiring rapper Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry.)
The atmospheric mood of the trailers are mesmerizing, and that’s no accident.
“Locking into a good tone or a good vibe is what makes people want to come back,” Glover said during FX’s session at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. It’s like “walking into the kitchen and knowing where everything is in the fridge.”
Season two is called “Robbin’ Season,” in reference to the time between Christmas and New Years when people often have packages stolen off their front steps.
But what the season really focuses on is how the characters respond to success. At its core, it asks “am I going to be a drug dealer, or am I going to be a celebrity?” Glover said.
It tackles the notion of fame and money, and how that creates a divide from “real life.”
“You realize how hard it is to be yourself; who you’re allowed to hang out with, what you’re allowed to do,” Glover said. And it’s a theme that’s seeped into the stars’ actual lives as well.
Season two is also broken up into episodes that stand on their own, but together create a cohesive narrative: “a story being told in a bunch of little parts … that all seem like their own thing, but come together as a whole.”
Atlanta premieres March 1 at 10 p.m. on FX.
