“The road ahead is uncertain, but the end is clear,” says King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) in the above trailer for this weekend’s premiere of HBO’s much-anticipated Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon. “The threat of war looms.”

What the king does not know is from whom that threat truly comes.

The rest of the trailer is given over to scenes of dragons and their fiery breath as the strains of the now familiar Game of Thrones score thrum in the background. New York City-based creative agency Bigstar provided the graphics.

Besides Considine, House of the Dragon also stars Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno and Rhys Ifans.

House of the Dragon is based on “Fire & Blood,” George R. R. Martin’s history of the Targaryen family and their conquest and ruling of Westeros. The series is co-created and executive produced by Martin with Ryan Condal co-creating, co-showrunning, executive producing and writing. Miguel Sapochnik, who directed several of Game of Thrones’ biggest episodes, co-showruns, executive produces and directs. Sara Hess, Jocelyn Diaz, Vince Gerardis and Ron Schmidt also executive produce.

House of the Dragon premieres Sunday, August 21 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. A new episode will debut each week through the season finale on Sunday, October 23.
