Iconic actor Sidney Poitier grew up in an all-Black society in the Bahamas, not realizing what sort of racism awaited him when he decided to move to the mainland in 1942.

“From the time I got off the boat, America began to say to me, ‘you’re not who you think you are,’” Poitier says in the trailer.

Once he experienced it, he was determined to combat it through his art.

Produced by Oprah Winfrey and directed by Reginald Hudlin, Apple TV Plus’ new documentary, Sidney, explores Poitier’s legacy as an actor, filmmaker and activist. He died January 6, 2022 at the age of 94.

“It’s not easy to represent when you have to represent the entire race,” says Spike Lee in the trailer.

The above trailer features interviews with such celebrities as Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Lenny Kravitz, Barbra Streisand, Lee and more, as well as clips from the Oscar winner’s films, including To Sir With Love, In the Heat of the Night and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. The trailer is scored with “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology) - Super Duper Remix” by Marvin Gaye and “Black Man In A White World” by Michael Kiwanuka.

Sidney is also produced by Derik Murray, in collaboration with the Poitier family. It’s written by Jesse James Miller with Terry Wood, Catherine Cyr, Brian Gersh, Paul Gertz, Hudlin, Joanna Shimkus Poitier, Anika Poitier and Barry Krost executive producing.

Sidney premieres in select theaters and globally on Apple TV Plus on Friday, September 23.
