New York City-based Block & Tackle uses simple imagery and fonts to set a somber tone for the opening sequence of FX’s five-part docuseries, Children of the Underground.
The images and footage are cropped into simple shapes, never revealing anyone’s face, while the font looks like it was typed directly onto the screen using an old-school typewriter.
The docuseries tells the true story of vigilante Faye Yager, who built a vast underground network to hide hundreds of mothers and children from the abuse of husbands and fathers. After she spoke about her work on daytime TV talk shows, the FBI began investigating her, setting off a highly publicized trial. After she helped the ex-wife and children of a wealthy banker disappear, the story became more complicated. The series seeks to untangle the truth about a visionary but haunted heroine.
Children of the Underground is produced by Story Syndicate, the production house founded by Oscar- and Emmy-winning filmmakers Dan Cogan and Liz Garbus (I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, Britney Vs Spears and Nuclear Family). It’s executive produced by Cogan, Garbus, Jon Bardin and Kate Barry, alongside directors Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Blackfish) and Ted Gesing.
Children of the Underground premiered Friday, August 12 on FX and began streaming Saturday, August 13 on Hulu.
