Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres is no stranger to awards shows (she’s hosted once before) and she’s certainly no stranger to promoting herself. So when it came to ABC’s upcoming Academy Awards telecast, she turned to her own popular digital properties to bring attention to her latest hosting gig.
“The Ellen Show” has posted a series of short promos for the awards show on its YouTube page, each under the simple heading of “Ellen’s Oscars Promo!” The three :15 spots feature Ellen marketing the show, but mostly marketing herself as TV personality. Nearly 8.5 million viewers are subscribed to “The Ellen Show’s” YouTube page.
“Side Effects” (above), the newest video, highlights possible results associated with watching the show, such as “laughter” or “ability to critique beautiful women in expensive gowns.” The next two, “3rd Time’s a Charm” and “I’d Like to Thank the Academy” riff on Ellen’s past Oscar duty, and the awards show’s well-known technique of playing people off the stage before they get too chatty.
The 86th Academy Awards will air March 2 on ABC.
Brief Take: All promotion is good promotion, and “Ellen,” the Oscars and ABC win with this cross-platform campaign.
