The NBC Peacock is strutting a little more proudly Tuesday morning, as their new late-night lineup solidly outperformed rival networks on its inaugural night.

Even without the massive Olympics lead-in, “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” averaged 6.26 million viewers Monday night, and delivered a 2.1 rating in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic.

And Seth Meyers’ bow as the new host of “Late Night with Seth Meyers” posted that program’s best numbers since 2005, with an average 3.4 million viewers and a 1.4 rating in the demo. He also outperformed Fallon’s debut in the same seat in 2009 by about 500,000 viewers.

Meyers was helped by two A-List guests on his first outing in the “Late Night” host’s seat: Vice President Joe Biden and his old partner at the SNL “Weekend Update” anchor desk, Amy Poehler.

The numbers come as other metrics from Fallon’s first week at “The Tonight Show” indicate NBC may have made a smart move by shifting its late-night lineup to include hosts more familiar with younger audiences.

The Wrap reported that in his first week, nine of Fallon’s video clips have gone viral, with each seeing more than one million views. “The Tonight Show”‘s revamped YouTube channel has racked up more than 37 million views total in week one, and added more than 176,000 subscribers.

Brief Take: Monday’s numbers seemed to prove that Fallon could deliver without the Olympics as a lead-in, but Meyers still has to prove that his audience wasn’t driven mostly by viewers checking out the new guy in town. If these numbers hold up past the kicking-the-tires phase, NBC may finally erase the memory of its last disastrous late-night changeover.
