Baldwin once said, “to be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time.”
That would be American novelist and social critic James Baldwin, not to be confused with actor Alec Baldwin—a mix up that sets the tone for season two of Dear White People in Netflix’s trailer.
Set against the backdrop of a predominantly white Ivy League university, racial tensions that were bubbling just below the surface in season one are now on the rise when the satirical series returns. And students at Winchester University are expressing it in different ways as they navigate a diverse landscape of social injustice, cultural bias, political correctness (or lack thereof) and activism in the millennial age.
The promo features Sam (Logan Browning) continuing with her progressive and polarizing radio show as her ex Gabe (John Patrick Amedori) films a documentary called “Am I Racist?” Through an absurdist lens, Dear White People utilizes biting irony, self-deprecation and sometimes brutal honesty to hold up a mirror to the issues plaguing society today, all the while leading with laughter, says Netflix.
The series is from creator, executive producer, director, writer and co-showrunner Justin Simien, and in addition to Browning and Amedori stars Brandon P. Bell, Antoinette Robertson, DeRon Horton, Ashley Blaine Featherson and Marque Richardson.
Yvette Lee Bowser serves as co-showrunner and executive producer, while Stephanie Allain and Julia Lebedev executive produce. The show is produced by Lionsgate for Netflix.
Dear White People returns May 4.
