HBO and Steven Sodebergh’s “Behind the Candelabra” were the big winners at Sunday night’s Creative Arts Emmys in Los Angeles, with the Liberace biopic taking home eight statues, and teeing the cable network up for a banner night at the Primetime Emmys ceremony Sept 22.

Netflix also made history by winning two Creative Arts Emmys—for casting and cinematography on “House of Cards”—meaning the upstart streaming service remains in play on Sunday night, with nominations in the outstanding drama series and lead actor categories, among others.

Emmy watchers will now wait to see if Netflix can score some upset victories and cement on-demand scripted series as forces to be reckoned with in today’s television awards landscape.

“Behind the Candelabra” has 15 overall Emmy nominations, and could possibly rack up a total of 13 wins before the Primetime ceremony is finished—stars Michael Douglas and Matt Damon are competing against each other in the lead actor category.

A win in every category would tie the record for most Emmys by a movie of miniseries, also set by HBO with “John Adams” in 2008.

At Sunday’s Creative Arts ceremony, the miniseries won in casting, art direction, editing, hair styling, sound mixing, prosthetic makeup, costumes, and cinematography.

In addition to nominations for Douglas and Damon, “Candelabra” could take home primetime awards for Outstanding Miniseries, supporting actor, writing, directing, and art direction.

HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” and the Tony Awards were the first runners up in the awards column at Sunday’s ceremony, pocketing four Emmys each.

And Bob Newhart was feted with an emotional standing ovation when he won for his guest role on CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory”—the first Emmy ever for the veteran actor, who has been nominated six times since the 1960s.

The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards will air live September 22 at 8 pm Eastern on CBS.

Brief Take: HBO remains the dominant Emmy player, particularly with its movies and mini-series, but Netflix could hog the spotlight come Emmy night with its bid to become the first streaming service to win an Emmy in a major category.
