Ahead of Presidents Day, CNN takes a look back at President Abraham Lincoln—the man who presided over the greatest division in our nation’s history, the Civil War—in its new original series, Lincoln: Divided We Stand.
CNN considers Lincoln’s words during a time of division, just as it was when Lincoln governed from the White House.
CNN partnered with Los Angeles-based creative agency Gravillis to craft the campaign, tying together Lincoln’s words with the politics of our day when politicians on both sides of the aisle consistently invoke those historic words.
In the top spot, “Kind Words,” CNN remembers when modern-day presidents Clinton, Obama and Reagan referenced Lincoln’s speeches.
“Inauguration” uses Lincoln’s own first inauguration speech as narrated by series narrator Sterling K. Brown. The spot aired prior to the recent inauguration of the 46th President of the United States, Joseph R. Biden.
CNN and Gravillis draw from a very current event for “Congress ”—in which members of Congress, speaking about the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol—again turn to Lincoln as they consider the second impeachment of former President Donald J. Trump.
But like all presidents, Lincoln was not perfect, and CNN references this in the fourth spot, “Only Human,” set to Rag’n’Bone Man’s song “Human.”
Finally, “Man vs. Monument,” set at the Lincoln Monument in Washington, D.C., considers Lincoln’s legacy and how the legend, captured in granite, compares to the man.
Lincoln: Divided We Stand premieres on CNN on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
