At the Social Media Awards on NBA TV Wednesday night, Kobe Bryant was honored with the “Social MVP Award.” He also received “The 140 Award” for his instantly famous “Amnesty THAT” tweet following a 38-point performance against the Dallas Mavericks on February 24, and a Laker win. The tweet was in response to Mark Cuban’s comments that the Lakers should cut Kobe under an amnesty clause that would let them avoid paying out his contract.

Bryant also won the “Snap Shot Award,” shared with Dwight Howard, for an image he tweeted of a mock fight between him and Howard in front of Coach Mike D’Antoni.

Pau Gasol made it a trio of Lakers winners, receiving the Social Difference Award for his work in the community.

Brief Take: The social version may not quite rival Bryant’s 2007-2008 league MVP honor, but these awards are a fun way of showing what social media can do to stir up interest around sports when the players on the court do it right.
