FX has renewed American Horror Story for three more seasons, the network announced ahead of its winter TCA press tour on Thursday.
“Somehow it just feels really poetic to me that American Horror Story is going to have 13 seasons,” FX chairman John Landgraf said during his executive session. “That just felt right.”
Season 10 will be released later this year after last year’s ‘80s-slasher theme. Series favorite Sarah Paulson, who stepped back last season to film Murphy’s Ratched and FX on Hulu’s Mrs. America, confirmed that she will return as a “central character.”
American Horror Story is one of 40-plus series that will be available on FX on Hulu, which made its official introduction during Sunday’s Golden Globes. Landgraf gave insight on the “transformative opportunity” that will help the network scale, he says.
“Basic cable can’t go beyond its own ceiling,” Landgraf said. “Even though we’re in 85 million homes, it’s not growing in terms of usage and expansion. FX on Hulu allows us to aggregate the strength of linear channels with a new 30 million homes. I think it will make the FX brand more valuable [as it will] penetrate deeper into American culture.”
Landgraf says the hub will help attract younger viewers, who historically lean toward streaming over linear channels. He also revealed that the average viewer of FX’s A Christmas Carol was 17 years younger on Hulu than on FX.
“For us, it’s really good that we were able to get a head start on making things that have a real appeal, a deep appeal to younger viewers, because I think they’ll do really well.”

The hub will launch in two phases, beginning with the premieres of Martin Freeman’s Breeders, Lil Dicky’s Dave, and the first FX on Hulu exclusive, Devs, from March 2-5.
Phase two includes season two of What We Do in the Shadows and the first three episodes of Mrs. America on April 15. Fargo, which stars Chris Rock in season four, premieres April 19.
Landgraf also unveiled his annual tally of TV shows on the air. In 2019, there were 532 scripted series—up 7 percent from 2018.
“Given that the streaming wars are now at hand, that total will increase substantially this year, which to me is just bananas,” Landgraf said.

American Crime Story: Impeachment Has Been Delayed
American Crime Story: Impeachment, which had previously been slated to premiere in September, will no longer coincide with the 2020 election.
Landgraf revealed that the project has been delayed due to Murphy’s packed schedule, which is currently centered on his adaptation of The Prom.
Atlanta Will Air Two New Seasons in 2021
The series, which last aired in May 2018, will air a 10-episode third season in January 2021. Season four is expected to air in fall 2020 with eight episodes, which are being shot-back-to-back in and outside of the United States.
