As it is wont to do, the Internet is blowing up currently around a mysterious trailer released via Twitter by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production company.
Dubbed “Stranger,” the trailer mixes together a trio of factually creepy elements without divulging one word about the sum of their parts: 1. A desperate-seeming man limping through the surf on a beach at night; 2. Deep, resonant British-accented narration saying cryptic things like “He arrived knowing nothing of himself;” and 3. A bald guy with his mouth sewn shut.
“Entertainment Weekly” broke the spot, inviting readers to chime in on what the trailer could be for. Is it an upcoming TV show? A new film? A digital endeavor of some kind? Theories abound with no definitive answers.
Brief Take: While vague trailers like this can raise the ire of viewers in the wrong context, intrigue and mystery are part of the Bad Robot brand of content, making “Stangers” the perfect promo for whatever it’s promoting. Abrams’ legions of fans love stuff like this and will talk about it for days—the best kind of marketing there is.
