On night two of premiere week, ABC’s The Muppets emerged the champ, scoring a 2.9 rating among adults 18-49, behind Monday night victor, NBC’s Blindspot, which tallied a 3.1, in the national overnight household ratings, according to Nielsen Media Research.

The Muppets also drew 8.9 million viewers, 4 million more than Selfie’s premiere last year in the time slot. Overall, The Muppets was ABC’s biggest comedy premiere since last fall’s black-ish, and is the network’s highest-rated debut among viewers and young adults since last fall’s How to Get Away with Murder.

That The Muppets played at 8 p.m. is no surprise, considering the critics’ early reaction to the show’s return. ABC also did a lot of fun social media and marketing around the premiere.

CBS’ Limitless, based on the movie of the same name, was Tuesday night’s most-watched new series, opening to 9.76 million viewers and a 1.8 among adults 18-49. NCIS, returning for its 13th season, averaged a still-potent 17.7 million viewers and a 2.4 among adults 18-49.

Fox debuted its much-hyped Scream Queens from Ryan Murphy in a two-hour premiere that drew 4 million viewers and a 1.7 among adults 18-49, on par with last fall’s debuts of New Girl and The Mindy Project. Fox is projecting that Scream Queens will move up 63% in the live plus three day ratings to a 2.6, but that open has to be considered soft after months of marketing. That said, the show is targeted at a younger demographic that doesn’t watch TV on a schedule and tends to stream their shows, so the increasingly irrelevant next-day ratings apply even less to it.

NBC counter-programmed with unscripted and live programming in The Voice and Neil Patrick Harris’ Best Time Ever, and led the night among adults 18-49 with a 3.0/10.
